Strengthening Programmes in brief

Strengthening programmes are an important part of regaining full function. Pain and injury can cause inhibition of normal muscle activation, resulting in weakness, even when an injury has “healed”. This results in incomplete recovery, leading to ongoing or re-occurring pain.

Specific muscle weakness is often difficult to identify, as it may lie in the smaller postural and/or stabilising muscles, not just the larger muscle groups. Therapy Max physiotherapists specialise in rehabilitative exercise programmes. They are able to identify where strengthening is required and can progress an exercise programme and assist your return to sport and work.

Strengthening programmes are usually based in the Cook + Phillip gym. Alternatively if you require a programme that can be done independently at home, our physiotherapists can adapt a programme for you.

Your exercise programme will reflect your goals because we design your strengthening towards the return to a specific sport or type of work etc.

At Therapy Max, gym based strengthening sessions are one to one and 30-60 minutes duration. Programmes are strictly supervised so that the client learns the correct exercises and avoids further injury.

The client is encouraged to return to the gym independently to practice the exercises and hence help them improve faster.

Injuries which benefit from these Programmes

People of any age and with a range of injuries and conditions do benefit from strengthening programmes. An incomplete list of injuries/conditions which Therapy Max has helped through these programmes includes:
• back and neck pain (including fractures and disc injury)
• fractures of the upper or lower limbs
• post surgical rehab (such as rotator cuff repair, joint replacements, back surgery, reconstructions)
• soft tissue injuries returning to
• whiplash and other multiple trauma injuries
• osteoporosis
• diabetes management
• cardiac rehab (phase 3 only)
• falls prevention
• weight management

Some people with very painful injuries benefit from a programme combining hydrotherapy with a graduated gym programme. This ensures return of strength and function without aggravation of pain.

Injured workers under WorkCover may be benefit from a “Work Conditioning Programme” to enable faster recovery and return to work. Therapy Max provides such programmes and can assist with enquiries.
